How Many Wires Does Nest Learning Thermostat Need? Typically, four. This is parallel to the standard four wires that most standard thermostats use.

We recommend professional installation for a 3rd- or 2nd-gen Nest Learning Thermostat, but you should be able to install a Nest Thermostat E yourself, depending on your system. Nest thermostats don't use jumper wires

Instead of using jumper wires, Nest Learning Thermostats use an internal jumper between the Rh and Rc connectors. A Nest Learning Thermostat will automatically use this internal jumper if your system needs it.

If you only have one R wire (no Rh or Rc), you can connect your R wire to either Rc or Rh on the Nest thermostat. Important: Don't connect any Jumper wires to the Nest thermostat. If you don't have an Rc wire, the Rh wire is the power wire for both your heating and cooling systems.

Heating and Cooling: 1 stage of heating (W1) and cooling (Y1) and a second stage of either heating (W2) or cooling (Y2). The Nest Learning Thermostat E is designed to work even if your home doesn't have a common C wire, but installation of a new C wire or the Nest Power Connector may be required in rare cases.

Nest thermostats are designed to use very little power, and in many cases they can use your system's heating and cooling wires to get enough consistent power. But sometimes, you may need to connect a common wire (C wire) or power accessory, like the Nest Power Connector, to make your system compatible.

Learning after a few days

After a few days, your Nest thermostat will have a decent idea about what temperatures you prefer throughout the day. But it will continue to fine-tune the schedule if you make further adjustments.
